Clinton is located in the center of South Carolina and has a population of just under 10,000. The town originally developed in the 1850s from a railroad intersection called Five Points that connected Laurens and Newberry. For many years it was known by that name. Later it was named for Henry Clinton, a respected local attorney from Laurens.

Clinton is known for its small-town charm and its centralized location. Situated near Interstate-385 and Interstate 26, Clinton is less than an hour’s drive from Columbia, Greenville, and Spartanburg. It is home to Presbyterian College, a private institution providing undergraduate and graduate degree programs to over 1,000 students.

Clinton was first inhabited by the Cherokee Indians and has a long and interesting history that dates back to the arrival of Scottish and Irish immigrants from the north in the mid-19th century. The settlers who inhabited the area played an active part in the Revolutionary War battle at Musgrove Mill in 1978. When outnumbered, the Patriots were able to defeat the Loyalists in an epic battle that is still remembered and re-enacted to this day.

In 2018, there were 1,649 motor vehicle collisions in Clinton’s Laurens County, according to the South Carolina Department of Public Safety. There were 32 fatalities, as a result, and 764 injuries.

The top five roadways for traffic collisions in Laurens County in 2018 included I-38, I-26, US-76, US-221, and SC-14. The top five intersections where collisions occurred included SC-14 at I-385, I-26 at SC-66, I-26 at SC-72, I-26 at SC-56, and SC-101 at I-385.

Anyone injured in a traffic accident should call 9-1-1 and report the accident. One of the following law enforcement agencies will be dispatched to respond:
