Accident App Designed to Help Drivers After a Collision

It’s summertime and that means many people are on the road for vacations and other trips. Now the National Association of Insurance Commissioners is offering a new smartphone app in the event of a car accident, The State reports.

The app, WreckCheck, offers tools and tips for drivers to use after a collision. Many of the tips focus on what people should and shouldn’t do after a wreck. This includes guidance on the type of information not to share with other drivers.

One example involves driver’s licenses. The app cautions users not to allow other drivers to copy or photograph their licenses under any circumstance. Exchanged information should be limited to insurance cards and telephone numbers. Individual drivers do not need to have all of the information that is routinely given to a police officer. The National Association of Insurance Commissioners says that sharing driver’s licenses after an accident raises a risk of identity theft.

The app was developed in August 2012, but the South Carolina Department of Insurance started promoting it to drivers before this year’s July 4th holiday, one of the heaviest traffic periods of the year.
