A recent study published in JAMA Internal Medicine shows a possible link between the use of Viagra (sildenafil citrate) and an increased risk of developing melanoma, a type of skin cancer that can be deadly if not caught and treated in its earliest stages.

The study found that men who used Viagra for erectile dysfunction were 84 percent more likely to develop melanoma. The study covered a 10-year period from 2000 to 2010.

In an article published on April 8, 2014, the American Council on Science and Health (ACSH) said that the study was well-run and its findings have a plausible biological explanation. The article also noted that the researchers included a control group of men who had erectile dysfunction but did not take Viagra. Men in that group did not show an increased incidence of melanoma. The study also controlled for underlying diseases, and found that chronic diseases did not affect the melanoma rate among Viagra users.

As stated in the ACSH article, among the nearly 26,000 men who participated in the study, the ones who had taken Viagra had twice the incidence of melanoma as those who had not taken the drug.

A Connection Between Viagra and Melanoma?

Melanoma can be much more serious than other types of skin cancer, as it aggressively metastasizes (multiplies and spreads) to other parts of the body.

When caught in the early stages, melanoma may be treated and cured with surgery. However, the prognosis can be much more dire with Stage III melanoma, when cancer cells have spread to nearby lymph nodes, or with Stage IV, when cancer cells have spread to distant lymph nodes and organs, such as the lungs, liver and brain.

The JAMA study concluded that “Sildenafil [Viagra] use may be associated with an increased risk of developing melanoma.” Labeling for the drug does not contain any warnings about the potential for an increased risk of developing melanoma.
