November 5th is Election Day and there are several key races in South Carolina which will impact the future rights of consumers, injured workers, and other injured persons. Because we have law firm members who are actively involved in both of the major political parties, the Joye Law Firm does not make endorsements along partisan political lines. Our recommendations do not necessarily reflect the individual preferences of staff and attorneys within the firm, nor do they represent full and unconditional recommendations. They simply reflect our views as to which candidates demonstrate the best record and/or platform when it comes to consumer rights and the rights of persons who are injured on the job or by the negligence of others.

There are two key races in South Carolina this November. The candidates to fill Senator Strom Thurmond’s seat in the U.S. Senate are Democrat Alex Sanders and Republican Lindsay Graham. As evidenced by the photograph of Judge Sanders in this newsletter, our firm attorneys have strong ties with him. However, both Judge Sanders and Congressman Graham have strong records when it comes to protecting consumer rights and the rights of injured persons.

The other key race is the contest between incumbent Democrat Jim Hodges and Republican Mark Sanford for Governor. This race does involve a clear choice when it comes to the rights of the people we represent. Governor Hodges has consistently supported the rights of consumers over big business interests. His service as governor has been especially important to the rights of injured workers as workers’ compensation commissioners in South Carolina are appointed by the Governor. To the contrary, while in Congress, Mr. Sanford consistently voted in favor of protecting corporate interests over those of consumers.

Please note that these comments do not address any other important considerations that may influence your voting decision. Regardless of whom you vote for, we urge you to make sure that you do vote. Our voting rights are the most important of our rights as citizens of this great country and too many Americans are failing to cherish this right and responsibility.
