Carolina’s Caribbean Culture Festival

Be Caribbean cool on the weekend of June 2nd through June 5th and kick off Caribbean Heritage Month at the Carolina’s Caribbean Culture Festival at Garners Ferry Sports Complex in Columbia. Events for this four-day carnival extravaganza will include:

  • Thursday night will be the Carolina Lyme Welcome Party from 10:00pm until 2:00am.
  • Party late on Friday night at the J’ouvert Cooler Fete from 12:00am through 5:00am.
  • The “It’s We Culture Carnival Village” and the Parade of the Bands will be from 1:00pm to 3:00pm on Saturday afternoon.
  • The South Carolina Carnival Concert will be held on Saturday night from 7:00pm to 10:00pm, featuring performances from artist such as Kerwin Dubois, DJ Avalanche, Teddyson John, and Cham and his Full Band.
  • Sunday enjoy Punch’d Drinks Inclusive from 11:00am to 5:00pm.

Carolina’s Caribbean Culture Festival is an opportunity for families and individuals to learn more about Caribbean culture in a Carnival-style fun, family-friendly atmosphere. The dynamic lineup of events provides a peek into the multiple facets that make up Caribbean culture. Music, parades, celebrations cuisine and entertainment all contribute to this unique and enriching experience.


DriftJam

Are you a local music lover looking for some unique musical fun to kick off your summer? The annual DriftJam Flotilla Music Festival is a one-of-a-kind music festival that is held over water so that participants can beat the heat and enjoy some time on the lake. Participants can attend by boat or other watercraft, and even can paddle about in other flotation devices during the show. Splash around while enjoying some cool tunes performed by some of the best local artists and bands.

Presented by Marine 360, the DriftJam Flotilla Music Festival has local up-and-coming bands perform live on a floating stage and everyone is in for a good time. Performers include:

  • Villa*Nova – a local funky pop and rock n’ roll hybrid band.
  • Kenny George Band – A country, folk and southern rock group.
  • Kelly Cheats – A local band that combines elements of Rock, Southern Pop, Reggae, Funk and Blues.
  • Finnegan Bell, Ellis Melillo, and Tyron and more!

Grab your swimsuit, sunscreen and a cooler because this family-friendly water event is all day fun in the sun. The DriftJam Flotilla Music Festival will be held just off of Spense Island in Lake Murray, South Carolina on June 11th, starting at 12:00pm.


Columbia Children’s Theatre Presents “The Commedia Hansel & Gretel”

Start your summer off with a good laugh while being entertained at the Columbia Children’s Theatre’s performance of “The Commedia Hansel & Gretel.” This hilarious show is a sweet treat for audiences and written and performed to appeal to the kid in everyone. The Spaghetti and Meatball Players have returned to the stage to delight and entertain with a funny retelling of the classic German fairy tale adventure of Hansel and Gretel. Children and adults alike will enjoy the onstage antics of Arlequino, Columbine, Antalone, Punchin, and Rosetta, as the Players perform this wiley original adaptation of a brother and sister who stumble upon a candy cottage in the middle of the woods. This isn’t the story that you think you know.

Audience interaction, laugh-out-loud jokes, physical comedy and thrilling surprises are in store for audiences who embark on this whimsical adventure with the Spaghetti and Meatball Players. “The Commedia Hansel & Gretel” show runs from opening night on June 10th, when there will also be an Opening Night Party for audience members to attend, through June 19th, with show times on Fridays at 7:00pm; Saturdays at 10:30am, 2:00pm and 7:00pm; and Sundays at 3:00pm. Columbia Shrimp and Grits Fest

Get ready to get your Southern chow on! Nothing is more famously branded as South Carolina cuisine than the tasty delicacy of shrimp and grits. Shrimp lovers will be delighted at the first ever Columbia Shrimp and Grits Fest. The event is an opportunity for guests to sample shrimp and grits recipes from local restaurants’ menus, and vote for their favorite. At least ten area restaurants will pull out all the stops as they tantalize your tastebuds while they compete for honorary titles such as “Columbia’s Best Shrimp & Grits” and “People’s Choice”. Marcus Lattimore will be a celebrity guest at the event, and a portion of the proceeds from this fest will benefit The Marcus Lattimore Foundation, which is dedicated to supporting youth development programs and initiatives.

The Columbia Shrimp and Grits Festival will be held on Saturday, June 18th from 6:00pm to 11:00pm at the Columbia Marriott. Tickets will entitle guests to unlimited tasting of shrimp and girt samples from participating restaurants. There will also be other activities, prizes, live music and fun! HERO. Dance Benefit

Those who serve our country deserve the best respect, appreciation and support that we can provide for them. The Honor, Enrich, Remember, Overcome (HERO) Benefit Gala for Veterans is an event meant to demonstrate to the South Carolina veteran community that South Carolinians honor them, want to enrich their lives through the art of dance, remember the sacrifices that our veterans have made for our country and remind our veterans that support is there for them as they overcome personal struggles after their service. The HERO Benefit Gala supports the Gary Sinise Foundation, which is dedicated to honoring veterans and providing them with support through creative, inspirational, and entertaining programs.

On Saturday, June 4th, starting at 7:00pm, the Columbia Music Festival Association will present the HERO Dancers Benefit, which will be held at the Township Auditorium, in Columbia. The event will begin with a series of dynamic dance performances by professional dances and choreographers, and is followed by an optional after performance dinner party. Local and international dancers will perform in honor and in dedication to our nation’s defenders and veterans. Lend your support to this American cause as a way to thank your local veterans for their dedication, sacrifice and service.


Miss South Carolina Pageant

It’s pageant season once again, and dozens of beautiful, smart, and stylish young women are gearing up to be contestants in the 2016 Miss South Carolina Pageant and the 2016 Miss South Carolina Teen Pageant. Embodying the best of today’s modern woman, these contestants are ready to compete in one of America’s longest running pageants. These women are role models and leaders in their communities; they are relatable, talented, and charming, and they exemplify what a strong, sensible South Carolina woman can be. They convey confidence with a smile and intellect with their well-chosen words.

These contestants have made their way up to the state finals, after winning in their preliminary pageants in their local communities. The winner will be made a state finalist by being crowned and given the title of Miss South Carolina, or Miss South Carolina Teen, and will be headed to the National Finals.

Come see some of South Carolina’s finest young women as they vie to be the next representative of South Carolina in the Miss America National Finals Pageant. The 2016 Miss South Carolina Pageant and the 2016 Miss South Carolina Teen Pageant will be held simultaneously the week of June 21st-25th, at the Township Auditorium, in Columbia. Over The Edge to End Hunger

Would you jump off of a building if it could help end local hunger? For those individuals who enjoy giving and have a sense of adventure, Over the Edge to End Hunger is a fundraising event that will take place on June 10th and 11th. Participants need to raise $1,000 in order to earn their opportunity to rappel down the Main Street side of The Hub in Columbia, a building that is 326 feet – that is 21 stories to end hunger! It is the second tallest building in the Columbia area. The event runs from 9:00am to 3:00pm.

 

The funds raised will go to Harvest Hope Food Bank, which provides meals to those in need in 20 counties in the Midlands part of South Carolina. Harvest Hope serves approximately 38,000 people in South Carolina, and distributed more than 28 million pounds of food last year. You don’t have to jump off a building if you do not want to; you can also sponsor others who are willing to rappel down the building to end hunger. Midlands Clay Arts Society Festival

Clay is more than just fun to play with; with hard work and talent, clay can serve as the foundation for beautiful works of art. The Midlands Clay Arts Society was created in recognition of this, and to promote the appreciate of clay art throughout Columbia.

One upcoming event in Columbia that should not be missed is the Midlands Clay Arts Society Festival. Scheduled to take place beginning on June 3rd and running through June 5th, the festival is a showcase of some of the Midlands’ finest works of art. Whether you are looking for an elegant piece for your dining room or a funky and unique piece of jewelry, you are sure to find it at this art fest. Items will be available for purchase.

This year, the Midlands Clay Arts Society Festival will be held at the Southern Pottery Workcenter and Gallery, located at 3105 Devine Street in Columbia. The hours of the event are as follows:

  • Friday: 4:00 to 9:00 p.m.
  • Saturday: 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.
  • Sunday: 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

6th Annual Blythewood DOKO Rodeo

The Town of Blythewood sure knows how to throw a rodeo! The Sixth Annual Blythewood DOKO Rodeo will be held on Friday through Sunday, June 3rd, 4th, and 5th, at the Blythewood Community Park. On Friday and Saturday, the grounds open at 5:30pm, while the Rodeo shows will start at 7:30pm, and this year the rodeo will open at 1:00pm on Sunday for Family Fun Day, with a 3:00pm Sunday Matinee Rodeo. Kids twelve and under can enjoy a free hotdog on Sunday while enjoying the sights, sounds and excitement that the rodeo has to offer.

Visitors to the rodeo can enjoy lively music, festive foods, entertaining rides, or shop at a number of specialized vendors. Visitors can also meet Ms. South Carolina Rodeo, or can get a closer look at some of the bulls from the rodeo show. At show time, visitors can watch while on the edge of their seats as cowboys and cowgirls compete in an IPRA Championship Rodeo with several events like barrel racing and bull riding, for a big prize money and a chance to compete in the International Finals Rodeo held in Oklahoma. Grab your boots and your cowboy hat and head on down to the Blythewood DOKO Rodeo.


Columbia Fashion Week

Get swept up in the whirlwind of excitement that is the world of fashion. Columbia will be holding its fifth annual Fashion Week from June 21st- June 25th. The events schedule includes:

  • Tuesday: The Fifth Annual Beautiful People Party from 7:30pm to 9:30pm at Nonnah’s. There will be mini Fashion Presentations with Freeze Models, and the Twenty Five Most Stylish People in Columbia will be announced and presented awards.
  • Wednesday: A Fashion Education Panel and Networking Mixer party from 7:30pm to 9:30pm at Capital Club. There will be mini Fashion Presentations with Freeze Models.
  • Thursday: Runway Showcases from designers and retailers such as Kids Runway Revolution I and II, TJ MAXX Kids, Annette Santiago, Amyrrh Designs, and SDJ by Deon, from 7:30pm to 9:30pm at The Dance Floor.
  • Friday: Runway Showcases from designers and retailers such as Marshalls, Entourage, Xodak Fashion, TJ MAXX Men, KenWam Designs, Bridal Show and more, from 7:30pm to 9:30pm at Seibels House and Gardens (outdoor garden showcase). There will also be an after party at Nonnah’s.
  • Saturday: Runway Showcases from designers and retailers such as Brooke Wilder Atelier, Charles Josef Bridal, Menswear, and Swimwear, Imagine This! Boutique, Grace Cuffy Designs, and more, from 7:30pm to 9:30pm at Seibels House and Gardens (outdoor garden showcase). There will also be an after party at Nonnah’s.
