The Myrtle Beach Chamber of Commerce estimates that more than 14 million tourists will visit the region this year. While vacationers do come throughout the whole year, spring break is clearly one of the most popular times. If you are planning on visiting Myrtle Beach for your vacation this spring, whether you are from another area in South Carolina, from out of the state, or out of the country, we want you to be able to fully enjoy your trip. To help, we have provided some of our best tips to help keep you and your family safe in Myrtle Beach this spring break.

Top Five Safety Tips for Your Spring Break Trip to Myrtle Beach

Drive Carefully

Car accidents remain one of the leading causes of accidental injury and death in the United States.

Whether you are travelling long distances to Myrtle Beach, or simply locally within the region, it is imperative that you drive carefully. Careful driving is especially important when you are on unfamiliar roads. You should always know exactly where you are going ahead of time,

so that you are not forced to look frantically for directions while driving. Additionally, please do not overexert yourself on your road trip. Always take frequent breaks, and, when possible, rotate drivers.

Know Your Surroundings

Vacationers need to remain aware of their surroundings. This starts from when you get to your hotel room. To best protect yourself and your personal belongings, always be sure to lock your doors. Further, you need watch your step. Many people are injured each year in slip and fall accidents that occur on vacation at their hotel or at other businesses. Watch out for tripping hazards, wet floors and other defective property conditions. Finally,  try to avoid high risk areas. For example, if you need withdraw money from an ATM machine, do not do so at night.

Be Careful Around Water

For those spending time in and around water this spring break, either at the beach or in a pool, you need to be careful. Please always practice the following four safe swimming habits:

  • Stay in areas where a lifeguard is present;
  • Do not dive into an unfamiliar body of water;
  • Do not run around the side of a swimming pool; and
  • Never swim while intoxicated.

Practice Safe Drinking Habits

For many people, part of letting loose on spring break is having a few drinks. Myrtle Beach has a wide variety of excellent restaurants and bars that can provide a fun experience no matter the atmosphere you desire. If you do plan on drinking alcohol over spring break, it is incredibly important that you practice safe drinking habits. Our team has put together a list of three of the most important alcohol safety tips:

  • Plan ahead for the logistics: You need to be sure that you have a way home from the bar after you are intoxicated. Your way home should never require you to get behind the wheel of a car or to wander through unfamiliar streets. Be sure that you have a ride with a designated driver, or access to a taxicab or an Uber. Do not drink and drive.
  • Limit your consumption: Nothing good comes from having too many drinks. Over consumption puts you at risk in so many different ways. You will make your night (and the next morning) far more fun if you watch your alcohol intake closely.
  • Keep your eye on your drink: Finally, you also need watch your glass. Unfortunately, predators are out there. Always watch your drink to be sure that no stranger has slipped a drug into it. If you feel the symptoms of being drugged (those being: extreme dizziness, sudden slurred speech or intense confusion) get yourself to a safe place immediately. In the worst cases, you may need to seek emergency medical assistance.

Stay Hydrated and Wear Sunscreen

Finally, please do not forget the basics. Even in the middle of March, the average high temperature in Myrtle Beach can reach into the 70s and sometimes into 80s. If you are spending the day outside, always be sure that you have access to plenty of fresh drinking water and always apply an ample amount of sunscreen. The last thing you want to do is ruin your vacation with a painful sunburn or a dehydration-related illness.
