Cast Off Fishing Tournament Series

The Cast Off Fishing Tournament Series returns to Charleston for another exciting season. Tournaments will take place throughout the summer at Mount Pleasant Pier and Folly Beach Pier. Both locations offer amazing scenery and great fishing. Further, on June 4th, the Folly’s Beach Anglers will host a special ‘Take A Kid Fishing Day’ as part of the series. This is the eighth annual kid’s tournament, and it offers fun for the whole family. Cast Off Tournament Series events offer prizes in several different categories. You will always want to arrive early in order to maximize the fun! All events are held rain or shine, and you should contact the Mount Pleasant Pier or the Folly Beach Pier with any specific questions.

Colonial Lake Grand Re-Opening

On June 4th, 2016, Colonial Lake is re-opening to the public. The City of Charleston, and the Park Conservatory, will be hosting the event, and the festivities are set to begin at 10:30 AM and will run until 2:00 PM. Charleston Mayor John Tecklenburg is expected to be in attendance. It is very exciting to see this park re-opened to the public. Eventgoers can expect to see a variety of entertainment, including musical performances from local artists and even a model sailboat race. Some of Charleston’s best food trucks will be on the site, including Mac Daddy and Smoke BBQ. Many of the activities are planned for children, including a park wide scavenger hunt and sidewalk chalk. This event will certainly have something for the whole family. If you are interested in seeing the official re-opening ceremonies, be sure to arrive early, as the ribbon is set to be cut at 11:00 AM.

Jerry Seinfeld at the PAC

World renowned comedian Jerry Seinfeld is coming to the Charleston area on June 4th, 2016. Jerry is best known for playing a fictionalized version of himself on his smash hit television show Seinfeld. Though the show wrapped up nearly twenty years ago, it still draws massive ratings every day in syndication. Jerry is a true superstar, and his critically acclaimed stand up routine is extremely popular. There is no doubt that this will be a hot ticket. If you are interested the stand up comedy show, be sure to act quickly to reserve your seats at soon as possible. The show will be held at the North Charleston Performing Arts Center. The venue opened in 1999, and it holds a little over 2,000 seats. At the North Charleston PAC, you always have a nice balance between a intimacy and fun crowd. It is sure to be a great place to watch Seinfeld. Doors are set to open at 6:00 PM.

Nighttime at the Museum

On Friday, June 3rd, Nighttime at the Museum returns to the Charleston. As another school year comes to an end in the city, this event offers you a chance to bring your kids down to the Charleston Museum (located on Meeting Street) for an experience that is both educational and tons of fun. This event is always a local favorite. Things are scheduled to begin at 6:00 PM and should last for around two hours. Nighttime at the Museum will include many actors dressed in historical costumes, scavenger hunts, special displays, and other fun for kids. Food and beverages will be served, including pizza, salad, and refreshing lemonade. Reservations are required to attend the festivities, so if you are interested, be sure you make yours as soon as possible. Remember, it will be dark, so you better bring your flashlight!

Sweetgrass Basket Weaving Workshop

On June 11th, the Sweetgrass Basket Weaving Workshop returns to the Charleston Museum. Basket maker Sarah Edwards-Hammond will be sharing her deep knowledge and extensive experience with interested lovers of arts and crafts and local history. Sweetgrass basket making has deep roots in South Carolina, dating to Antebellum era, and the craft has roots that extend back into West Africa. Sweetgrass baskets, which are elegantly beautiful, were such a highly desired agriculture resource because of their notorious strength. Mrs. Edwards-Hammond will be sharing information about the craft, and assisting attendees as they make their own sweetgrass baskets. If you and your family are interested in learning more about our local history, you should not miss your chance to attend this event. It is important to note that space for this class is very limited, and you need a reservation in order to attend, so if you are interested, sign up soon!

The Ben Folds Orchestra Experience with the CSO

On June 8th, Ben Folds is teaming up with the Charleston Symphony Orchestra (CSO) to put on an exciting musical event. The show, which will take place at Volvo Car Stadium on Daniel Island, is scheduled to begin an 8:00 PM. The stadium is an excellent venue to see concerts, and it has hosted many top musical acts along with World Tennis Tour events. Ben Folds is a multiplatinum artist, who has had many critically acclaimed hits while he was the frontman for his self named band Ben Folds Five. Since 2013, Folds has put a brand new spin on his music. He will be Joining CSO conductor Yuriy Bekker. While on the piano, Ben Folds will perform many of his most well known pop hits, along with newer symphony music, while being accompanied by our area’s very own Charleston Symphony Orchestra. Folds is also known for engaging in witty banter with the audience in between songs, so the show is sure to be loads of fun.

Piccolo Spoleto Sand Sculpting Competition

The Piccolo Spoleto Sand Sculpting Competition is back for another year! This season’s event, which will take place on June 4th, is scheduled to start at 9:00 AM. The sand sculpting will occur at Front Beach at Isle of Palms, and admission to the watch the show is free for spectators. There are going to be prizes offered in six different categories, including some fun team categories. Whether you are interested in participating, or just want to see the sculpting, this competition always offer fun for the whole family. Chris Tindal will be the sand sculpting coordinator this year, and once again you can expect to see some of our local artists turn simple sand into incredible works of art. If you are interested in competing in the event, please remember to fill out the registration form and send it over to Mr. Tindal. (Don’t forget to take a look at the official contest rules!)

Party in the Park

The Party in the Park series, hosted by WEZL, 103.5 FM, returns to Mount Pleasant Memorial Waterfront Park beginning June 7th. The events take place every Tuesday in June, and admission to the show is free! The music typically starts around 6:00 PM and lasts until 9:00 PM. After the free show, Red’s Ice House will host the official after party. Many great national, and local, country acts are scheduled to perform throughout June, including Brandy Clark, Eric Paslay, David Nail, Drake White and Lauren Alaina. Eventgoers are welcome to bring lawnchairs and blankets, but please leave your dogs and coolers at home. There will be food and refreshments available, including beer, on site. This is a popular event, so parking can sometimes be an issue. However, there are offsite parking locations available, and you can hitch a (free!) ride on the trolley to get to the event. The park is picturesque, so come early to enjoy the sites.

Spoleto Festival Finale + Beer Garden

The Spoleto Festival Finale, sponsored by Wells Fargo, is scheduled to take place on June 12th. The gates, and the Beer Garden, will open at 3:30 PM. This year’s musical lineup is headlined by Nathaniel Rateliff & the Night Sweats, a classic soul group based out of Colorado. The event also features an excellent selection of Charleston area musical acts including The High Divers and Jordan Igoe. The music will be playing throughout the afternoon leading up to Nathaniel Rateliff taking the stage at 8:30 PM. This is the 40th year of the festival, and following the conclusion of the final performance, there will an eye popping fireworks display to mark the occasion. Concertgoers are permitted to bring lawn chairs, blankets, refreshments and other outdoor supplies. There will also be a great selection of local food and beverages, and everyone is encouraged to arrive early to enjoy the festivities and the atmosphere at Middleton Place.
