A busy intersection in Myrtle Beach, considered one of the most dangerous in the area, may now be much safer. Thanks to the installation of new traffic lights, the intersection of Pine Island Road and Oak Forest Lane, near the entrance of Coastal Grand Mall, could overcome its notorious record for having 70 crashes — more than any other intersection in the city — over a three-year period.

Improvements from the New Traffic System

The two new lights at the busy intersection just east of the U.S. 17 bypass have significantly improved traffic flow since they were installed in November.

After months of construction and a $125,000 bill, there have not been any accidents at this intersection. In fact, no collisions were reported during the hectic holiday season, where a nearby mall drew increased traffic.

The city plans to watch these traffic signals and their effect on traffic in the next few months. With the arrival of new businesses in the vicinity, city officials want to make sure the potential increase in traffic doesn’t cause any safety issues.
