It’s hard for some people to put their mobile devices aside, even when they should be keeping their eyes on the road. Even as states enact bans on text messaging behind the wheel, drivers continue to engage in this deadly habit.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, more than 3,000 people were killed in collisions due to distracted driving in 2011. Sadly, this was an increase from 2010’s figures.
In California, one of the first states to make it illegal to text while driving, the number of texting drivers has doubled. According to a study conducted by AAA of California, 3.4% residents text while they drive compared with 1.5% prior to the creation of its 2009 law.
Currently, South Carolina is one of three states without a statewide ban on texting while behind the wheel. In 2013, at least 10 distracted driving bills were considered in the state legislature, but all failed to pass.
New York has a new idea about how to put an end to this dangerous distraction. New York has decided to add “texting zones” along its highways and other thoroughfares. Governor Andrew Cuomo recently announced the plan to provide special areas where motorists can park and text.
Initially, New York will designate 91 texting zones around the state, which will be identified by signs. These texting zones will not require any additional construction because they will made by converting existing rest stops and parking areas along the New York State Thruway and state highways.
Some critics believe that texting zones send the wrong message to people who fail to obey the rules. In addition, some say bike lanes and pedestrian walkways should have greater priority than texting zones.
Critics wonder whether motorists will stop and use these texting zones.
South Carolina and Distracted Driving
If these designated areas do reduce the number of deaths due to distracted driving in other states, they could be a solution for South Carolina to consider.
