South Carolina is among 12 states to receive grant money for programs and railroad safety messages at movie theaters and on television, radio, and billboards. The funds come from the Federal Railroad Administration in partnership with Operation Lifesaver, Inc.

National statistics show that fatalities at highway-railroad crossings and from trespassing incidents make up an estimated 95 percent of all rail-related deaths. In 2012, South Carolina had 59 highway-rail grade crossing collisions. During that year, seven people died in South Carolina due to motor vehicle crashes at railroad crossings.

Distracted driving plays a significant role in automobile crashes at train crossings. For this reason, South Carolina has joined Operation Lifesaver programs in North Carolina, Georgia and Ohio to place billboards along highways close to major railroads. The billboards urge drivers not to use electronic devices while driving.
