More than 25 percent of American teens admit to the dangerous habit of texting while behind the wheel resulting to teen driving accidents. Now a South Carolina group wants to reduce that statistic with the help of a special technology.

The Canary Project, an initiative started by the app developer 52apps, is promoting a smart phone app to alert parents when their teens are texting, talking on the phone or using social media while on the road.

How the Texting App Works

According to Jani Spede, the CEO of this initiative, the Canary app reports any texting that occurs when a driver is going over 12 miles per hour. The person who receives this report is viewed as the driver’s “accountability partner.” This individual will receive real-time message alerts as soon as the vehicle operator begins using a smart phone at certain speeds behind the wheel.

Parents can designate themselves as accountability partners to monitor their children’s actions and discourage distracted driving. It could be a valuable tool for families to address this potentially lethal problem, ensuring an end to the use of hand-held devices while operating motor vehicles.
