Travelers in Florence, South Carolina, may get further guidance as they drive around the town. Tourism leaders in Florence County are recommending more directional signs to assist motorists as they search for popular destinations.

In addition to helping people navigate better, extra signs can also decrease the risk of distracted driving. Motorists often drive erratically by making sudden lane changes when they have trouble finding their way. But by providing supplementary signs to Florence’s roads, drivers will be less likely to make hazardous decisions behind the wheel as they travel the area.

Not only could distracted driving be improved by more directional signs, tourists can also get a better appreciation of the town’s unique attractions. A tourism survey conducted at local restaurants and stores made clear that many tourists were unaware of certain Florence landmarks. From museums and golf to theatre and a national cemetery, Florence has numerous places for tourists to visit.

Holly Beaumier, the director of the Florence Convention and Visitors Bureau, believes the new signs would benefit the town in a number of ways. “The directional signage is going to add a lot of accessibility, really, to the people who don’t know the area,” she said.

In addition, clear signs will enable residents and tourists alike to find more efficient ways around the town. So traffic and the dangers associated with distracted driving may diminish as a result.

Beaumier also says that the minimal cost of installing more signs is another positive aspect to moving forward with this plan.
