Texting while driving is unquestionably a dangerous habit. Now a legendary filmmaker has produced a documentary that shows real people whose lives have been directly affected by the tragic aftermath of texting behind the wheel.

Werner Herzog’s film, called “From One Second to the Next,” is a collaboration with AT&T, Slate.com reports. The corporation approached the movie producer to create a series of short films to warn people about the hazards of texting while driving. The company’s initiative set in motion a film that is both haunting and informative, forcing viewers to see how the act of texting can ruin people’s lives.

Herzog recalls feeling connected to the project soon after AT&T presented the idea to him.

“What AT&T proposed immediately clicked and connected inside of me,” Herzog told the Associated Press.

The 35-minute film has become an Internet hit, extending far beyond its original intent to educate and spread awareness to students, safety groups and government agencies around the country.

Herzog profiles four accidents in emotional detail, interviewing victims, their families and the individuals who caused the crashes. He takes viewers to the scene of some of the accidents, with police officers showing photographs of the wreckage.
