History of Hispanic Heritage month

National Hispanic Heritage Month is observed annually from September 15 to October 15, honoring the histories, cultures, and contributions of Americans with ancestry from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America. The theme for 2024 is “Pioneers of Change: Shaping the Future Together.”

Originally established as Hispanic Heritage Week by President Lyndon Johnson in 1968, the observance was extended to a full month by President Ronald Reagan in 1988, beginning on September 15 and ending on October 15. This extension was formalized into law on August 17, 1988, with the approval of Public Law 100-402.

September 15 is a key date as it marks the independence anniversaries of Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. Mexico and Chile also celebrate their independence on September 16 and September 18, respectively. Additionally, Día de la Raza, or Day of the Races, observed on October 9, is part of this commemorative period.

At Joye Law Firm, we proudly celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month. We are honored to recognize the vital role that Hispanic-Americans play in our country and are thankful for the invaluable contributions they make to both our firm and our communities. We are dedicated to honoring the rich cultural heritage of our Hispanic clients and colleagues, and we strive to support and advocate for the diverse communities we serve.

South Carolina’s Rich Hispanic Culture

Latin culture in South Carolina is vibrant and influential, enriching the state’s social and cultural landscape. The Latin community, which includes individuals from various countries such as Mexico, Puerto Rico, Colombia, and Venezuela, contributes significantly through its traditions, cuisine, music, and festivals.

Local communities celebrate with lively events like salsa festivals, folkloric dance performances, and cultural parades that highlight the diversity and richness of Latin heritage. Restaurants and food markets offer a taste of Latin America with authentic dishes like tacos, empanadas, and arepas, becoming beloved staples for many South Carolinians. Moreover, the Latin culture’s emphasis on family values, community support, and artistic expression has contributed to the dynamic and welcoming atmosphere in cities like Charleston, Columbia, and Greenville. Through these cultural contributions, Latin traditions continue to enhance the state’s cultural tapestry and foster cross-cultural understanding and appreciation.

According to 2020 Census data, Hispanics make up 6.9% of South Carolina’s population, with Mexicans being the largest group among the diverse ethnicities represented. The Hispanic community is present in every county, with Jasper County having the highest percentage at 17.6%. Entrepreneurship is a key aspect of the Hispanic community, with Hispanic-owned businesses experiencing the largest growth among all minority groups in the state between 2007 and 2012. This growth highlights the significant economic contributions of Hispanic individuals, adding millions of dollars to the state economy annually.
