Texting while driving is an extremely dangerous act. According to Distraction.gov, the official U.S. government website for distracted driving, in a single recent year, there were 3,154 people killed in motor vehicle crashes involving a distracted driver. Many of these drivers were distracted by a cell phone.

To the attorneys at Joye Law Firm, texting while driving is an extremely important issue. Kenny Harrell, managing partner at Joye Law Firm, explains in a video posted on YouTube why the issue of texting and driving is so important:

Texting and driving is a component of our Joye in the Community program this year. We are going to be working on a couple of different programs with local schools trying to get that message across. I know that kids think that they’re bulletproof. It’s not just kids, there are adults, people in their 40s, 50s, 60s, who are texting and driving as well.

In many ways, it has displaced drunk driving as this danger that we have on our highways now, and essentially it is the equivalent. People who would never go out and knock out five or six drinks and then get behind the wheel of a car do not think anything about getting behind the wheel of a car and then sending a text while driving 80 miles per hour. It is the same level of distraction, it is the same level of impairment, and it is the exact same result. Whether you are texting while driving or driving drunk, when you crash into somebody at 80 miles per hour, you are going to do the same damage and you are going to put yourself at the same level of risk.

It is an epidemic. In our country, we know that there is an epidemic with any sizeable attention span, it is just something that we know is an increasing problems. It is easy to say at age 52 that it is a generational thing and that it is the generations below us, but it goes beyond it. It is one of those things that is such a danger and you do not know what else people can do to get the message across because it is hurting and killing people on an annual basis. It’s really, really scary.

Joye Law Firm’s ‘Stay Alive’ Project

Joye Law Firm’s Stay Alive project invites people to play a game on the firm’s website that simulates driving while being distracted by a cell phone. At the conclusion of the game, people are urged to take a pledge to never text while driving. If you want to help reduce the number of auto accidents caused by distracted driving each year, take the pledge today!
