texting while driving

The South Carolina Highway Patrol wants high school students to know the dangers of texting while driving. That’s why it is teaming up with Subway for a second year to promote its W8 2 Txt program and spread awareness of this potentially lethal habit.

The Highway Patrol hopes the teens will refrain from using mobile devices behind the wheel throughout adulthood.

Patrol officers gave students at Lake City High School the chance to see how difficult it is to drive and text at the same time. The demonstration proved that looking away from the road for even a few seconds while traveling an average of 55 miles per hour is comparable to driving blindfolded across a football field.

Last year, Lake City High School had the most students in the region who signed the W8 2 Txt pledge. The high school that gathers the highest percentage of pledges wins free Subway sandwiches for the entire student body.

Eleven regions in South Carolina are participating in the W8 2 Txt partnership. The goal is to urge students to wait to send their texts until they are not operating a motor vehicle. Automobile accidents are a leading cause of death for teenagers.
