Fewer bicyclists are being injured in collisions with cars in Hilton Head, S.C., where bike paths and signs abound. Last year, Hilton Head had 16 bike-car accidents, a 38 percent drop from 2011, the Island Packet reports.

It’s no coincidence that Hilton Head is a more bicycle-friendly community. Recently, the town has taken deliberate action to make the island a better place for bike riders. Safety education efforts by the Bicycle Advisory Committee and a sophisticated public bike path system have served to protect bike riders from automobile traffic.

Hilton Head has 57 miles of public paths that bike riders can use. By spring of 2014, nearly three more miles of paths will be ready.

In addition, Hilton Head plans to place 30 new information kiosks along various paths to help bikers navigate the area. These updated kiosks will be strategically located to make sure bicyclists have all the tools they need to ride as safely as possible.

Hilton Head has received national recognition for its improvements to assist bike riders. In 2011, the League of American Bikers awarded the town a silver-level rating, which makes it the highest ranked area in South Carolina.
