I’m William Asche, an attorney here at Joye Law Firm. I work out of the Charleston office. I handle workers’ compensation and personal injury law.
People are not walking through our door with great news. Something unfortunate has taken place, whether it’s an injury in the workplace or some accident outside of work. They’ve been hurt. They have medical bills that are piling up. They have concerns about their income stream, and they have concerns about taking care of their family.
In the vast majority of cases, the client is still dealing with the injury itself. First and foremost, we want to make sure they are getting the medical treatment they need. They should be focused on the recovery process. When an insurance adjuster is dismissive or not responsive, we can deal with that and take away a lot of the client’s stress. When we get involved, the adjusters start picking up the phone more.
The business model for insurance companies is really simple. They make their money by denying or limiting the costs of these claims. Unless you have an attorney, you’re not going to be treated fairly when you get into the nitty-gritty part of the claim.
Clients can be incredibly intimidated by the entire claims process and the court system. I say, “I’m on your team, I’m in your corner. You don’t need to worry. We are going to move forward with this, come to a positive resolution and get you back to as close as 100 percent as possible. That’s our goal.” To start seeing that taking place and have clients move on with their lives is a great feeling.

When I was growing up, I really enjoyed history, and I was a history major in college. As I read about American history, what stood out was how many lawyers served as innovators for our country. That piqued my interest. I took some pre-law classes as an undergrad, and that solidified my interest.
The most important thing I do in that first meeting is to really listen to them. You’ve got to listen to your client. Your client has an unbelievably important amount of information that you need to get from them. You want them to feel comfortable and open and honest with you. It’s not enough just to know the statutory law or how to put together demand packages. You’ve got to know your client through and through. You cannot do it without listening.
At the initial meeting, clients want to get a lot of things off their chest and air out their concerns before they ever get into the legal aspects of their claim. I allow them to get things off their shoulders and then we can start talking about the logistical steps – how we are going to move forward, what the case is going to look like, and the time frame. I try to give them some kind of direction and level of comfort.
It’s a great joy to help people navigate the court system, which can be intimidating and confusing to a lot of people. The idea of being able to use our court system and legal training for the greater good is incredibly satisfying.
William received an undergraduate degree in history from Trinity College and his law degree from the Charleston School of Law. Among William’s honors is the CALI Excellence for the Future Award in Pleadings and Practice. The CALI Excellence for the Future Award® is given to the highest scoring student in specific law school classes.
William has memberships in various legal groups, including the American Bar Association, the South Carolina Bar Association, the Charleston County Bar Association and the South Carolina Association for Justice.
