12-Cents Kids’ Day! | Columbia, SC

In celebration of EdVetures 12th birthday, admission for kids in only 12 cents on the 12th of the month from 9AM to 5PM through the end of 2016. If you sign up for a museum membership on the 12th, receive 12 Chick-fil-A Kids Meals. EdVenture is an educational institution creating museum experiences, afterschool programming, and camps for children of all ages.

Second Annual Columbia Black Rodeo | Columbia, SC

The Southeastern Rodeo Association’s Second Annual Black Rodeo Show and Competition is scheduled to roll into town on Saturday, May 21 at 7:30 PM. In its second year, the Black Rodeo has been a favorite activity for decades for rodeo enthusiasts and spectators. Featuring professional cowboys, cheer on your favorite cowboy as they compete for cash prizes totaling $8,900 in prize money and bragging rights. Make sure to see the bull riding, steer wrestling, bareback riding, calf roping, team roping, and barrel racing activities to enjoy all the planned event activities.

Thunder Over the Midlands Shaw Air Expo | Columbia, SC

The Shaw Air Force Base sponsors the annual Thunder Over the Midlands Air Show. The event will take place the weekend of May 21 through May 22 at the Shaw Air Force Base in Columbia, SC. The event is free and open to the public for two days of heart-pounding fun. Prepare to be dazzled as the fighter airplanes twirl and fly through the gorgeous blue skies of Sumter, by the expert pilots of the 20th Fighter Wing division. Beginning at 8:00AM the show lasts all day.

8th Annual Spring Valley Car Show | Columbia, SC

Every year for the past eight years the Spring Valley Car and Truck Show has taken place in Columbia. Spend the day looking at classic cars and trucks. At the annual car and truck show, 23 classes of vehicles will be featured and 46 class trophies will be awarded. There are six special prizes that will be awarded throughout the event. Eat, see the cars and trucks, participate in the auction, and compete for door prizes. Free for spectators, see below for pricing information.

Big and Bold: Selections from the Collection

The Big and Bold art exhibit from the Columbia Museum features oversized and larger than life art from the Museums’ collection. Running from May 26 through October 23, the exhibit will feature artists from around the world including Chuck Glass, known for his portraitures of the famous and not so famous. Other featured artists include Amy Fichter, Sam Gilliam, Jim Dine, Andy Warhol, and Gene Davis, among other artists.

19th Annual Black Expo | Columbia, SC

The Annual Black Expo takes place at the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center on May 21st. In its 19th year, join celebrity guest speaker David Banner, performances by entertainers Jonathan Nelson and Keke Wyatt, and celebrity guests Quevenzhane Wallis and Terrance H for the all-day seminars and live entertainment. Seminar topics include advice on beauty, finance, love, cooking, pain management, wellness, and entrepreneurship. Free for attendees, make sure you register on the date of the event. Expo doors open to the public at 10:30 AM.

Daufuskie Memories in Columbia | Columbia, SC

The community of Daufuskie was the last of the South Carolina sea islands to come into contact with the outside world. Between the years of 1977 and 1982, photographer Janne Moutossamy-Ashe took 60 photographs of African American life on Daufuskie Island. Inhabitants spoke Gullah and their traditions were preserved because of the island’s isolation from the rest of the state. The photographer set out to record island life and preserve the people and places she came into contact with for generations to come.

Endangered Species Day | Columbia, SC

On May 20th learn about endangered species and what you can do to help protect these vulnerable animals and creatures. Zoo guests will participate in educational adventures focusing on the Zoo’s SAFE program (Saving Animals from Extinction). Even though the subject is heavy duty, the presentation is fun focusing on awareness and protection efforts to keep as many species alive and off the endangered species list. Wildlife conservation is everyone’s business – do your part to save as many animals as possible and get the word out about vulnerable animals.

Five After Five Concert Series | Columbia, SC

Five After Five is a free outdoor concert series in Columbia’s Five Points fountain. Beginning in April and continuing through October, every fourth Thursday come out and enjoy the sounds and tunes of performing bands and artists. In to the live music entertainment, local food vendors, arts & crafts vendors, local breweries, and activities for kids will be available. The activities promise to have something for everyone and provide hours of entertainment and fun for all members of the family.

JAILBREAK 5K | Lexington, SC

Every year for the past nine years, people of all ages and fitness levels have participated in a race to support law enforcement efforts in Lexington Country. Over 4,500 people have run and $65,000 has been raised to support the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department Foundation, a nonprofit 501(c)3 organization. A male and female champion will be crowned and receive cash prizes. All ages are welcome to race, including under 10s and special groups, like Clydesdale and Athena.
