Moja Arts Festival

The MOJA Arts Festival in Charleston, South Carolina is a celebration of those African Americans and persons of Caribbean heritage who have made large contributions to culture, arts, and music. The event – which spans multiple days – features music, food, poetry, arts and crafts, visual arts, dance, theatre, and more.

Cost: Some events during the festival are free; other events required ticket admission. The opening day street parade on September 29th at 6:00 p.m. at Marion Square is free.

Summerville Italian Fest

Scheduled to take place in historic downtown Summerville early this October, the Summerville Italian Festival celebrates Italian heritage with food, music, and more. Festival-goers especially love the wide array of cuisine that’s available, as well as plenty of Italian wine. While there will certainly be food and drink at this festival, the whole family – including young children – are welcome! Local artists will also be providing entertainment at the festival. Whether you’re Italian yourself or just want something fun to do on a Sunday, this festival is a must!

Fall Tours of Homes and Gardens

Whether you’re a homeowner yourself, a history buff, or simply someone who appreciates architecture and unique design, the Fall Tours of Homes and Gardens, organized by Friends of the Preservation Society of Charleston, is worth attending. The 40th annual event invites visitors to tour the most historic homes in Charleston – guests can take private tours, attend lunch lectures, and are invited to behind-the-scenes programs. Guests are even welcome to take a self-guided tour at their own pace, with knowledgeable staff nearby to answer any questions about the homes’ histories.

Time: The Legare Street Tour (October 6th) is from 5:00-8:00 p.m.; the Church Street Tour (October 16th) is from 2:00-5:00 p.m.; and the Meeting Street Tour (October 8th) is from 2:00-5:00 p.m. You can view all tour dates and times online.

Cost: Each tour is priced differently. Most tours cost $50, although some are $40. A Day on Cooper tickets are $125.

Goose Creek Fall Festival

Fall is here! And what better way to kick off the new season than with a festival? The 2016 Goose Creek Fall Festival will have everything necessary to welcome the cooler weather and have a fantastic day with family and friends. This year, attendees can expect a live DJ, local entertainment, a climbing wall, a play area for kids, vendors, and local craftsmen. What’s more, all proceeds from the festival will be donated to Goose Creek’s local food bank – Helping Hands.

Komen Race for the Cure

Breast cancer takes the lives of more than 40,000 women every year. To raise awareness about the severity of the disease, and to raise money for more breast cancer research, the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure foundation sponsors runs throughout the country. This year, the 23rd annual Lowcountry Komen Race for the Cure will be held in mid-October. Both 1K and 5K distances are available for walking or running, and people can register as a team or as an individual. Kids can also register as well.

Halos Oyster Roast

It doesn’t get much better than an evening full of wine, oysters, hotdogs, chili, and beer complete with a silent auction and live music. Add waterfront views and the fact that the event is being held in order to raise money for HALOS (Help and Lending Outreach Support) – an organization that provides assistance to abused and neglected children and their caregivers – and there’s no reason not to get tickets.

While the event is one that will be thoroughly enjoyed by adults, HALOS Oyster Roast is also kid-friendly. In fact, there will even be a jump castle!

South Carolina State Table Tennis Championships

Table tennis, also known as ping pong, can get pretty competitive in South Carolina. In fact, the South Carolina State Table Tennis Championships are quickly approaching, and are scheduled to take place this October. Even if you’re not a ping pong champ yourself, you’ll get a kick out of observing this fast-paced event. In fact, table tennis is not only considered the fastest sport, but also the most popular; the sport is played globally in 222 of 226 member nations of IOC, more than any other sport.

Time: There are 16 different events on two different days. Saturday events start at 10:30 a.m. and concludes at 5:00 p.m.; Sunday events begin at 9:30 a.m. and conclude at 4:00 p.m.

Where: City of Hanahan Gym, 1255 Yeamans Hall Road, Hanahan, South Carolina 29410.

Cost: Spectators can attend the event for free. Entry fees for players range between $5.00 and $20.00.

Children’s Day Festival

The Mount Pleasant Children’s Day Festival is scheduled to take place this October, and is sure to be a hit for adults and kids alike. This 29th annual event will feature carnival rides, an outdoor rock wall for climbing, and inflatable slides for young ones. Kids will get to go home with a variety of goodies, including Halloween bags, giveaways, and prizes.

This year’s theme is “Hop to it!” and Kermit the Frog will be making an appearance!

Adults will enjoy the live music and entertainment, as well as the many food concessions. The event is presented by Publix, and is hosted by East Cooper schools.

Colour of Music Festival

Most classical musicians who are known amongst people today are white; rarely do classical musicians of color come to mind. However, there are a number of tremendous contributions made by musicians of African descent, such as the works of Le Chevalier de Saint-Georges, an African-French composer.

The Colour of Music Festival, which is in its fourth year, is a multi-day festival that seeks to showcase the impact and historical significance of black classical composers.

Time and location: Performances and events will be held at different times and venues throughout Charleston, South Carolina throughout the festival’s five days.

For example, purchasing a ticket package for Friday, October 21st is $85.32. Prices are discounted for seniors. As a note, there will be a single free event – Rufus Jones, author of Negro at Home, Maestro Abroad – on October 17th.

Coastal Carolina Fair

Since 1957, the Coastal Carolina Fair has been providing “All fun!” for those in the Ladson, South Carolina and surrounding areas. The 11-day fair event has everything that a Southern fall fair should, including funnel cake, elephant ears, entertainment, pageants and talent search, shows and displays, rides, competitions, and much, much more. Adults and children alike are sure to love the fair this year!
